Week3. Materials

This is a leaf created by using one single plane applied with the leaf image. The image was edited in Photoshop to get the negative space. The image was applied in material editor as a diffuser. The edited images was imported in maps sub-menu at opacity selection. This removed all the background from the image and leaved only a required texture of the leaf. After this the bump was choosen to give more detail to the texture. The final texture was applied to the plane. The soft selection was used to alter the shape by editing the vertexs of the plane.

Week2. Modelling using reference planes. Tank.

The simple box was created as a plane for a reference image. The bitmap was applied to plane and adjusted in order to show required view of the tank. The planes were freezed so it would not be selected during the modelling process. The tank was created using primitive shapes like boxes and cylinders. The boxes of tank body where converted to editable poly. This allowed to alter the position of vertexes according to reference image. The difficult part was the wheel track. The path was created using line tool. The single track unit was modelled. Using constrain to path option the track unit was assigned to the path. Using the snapshot from tools menu the path was filled with multiple track units to create the final track.

Week2. Modelling from shapes

The shape for chess piece was created in Adobe Illustrator. Then shape was imported to the 3D MAX environment. The pivot point was moved to the point around which the shape will be rotated by axis. Then lathe modifier was used to create a 3D model from the shape. The weld core box was also checked to make a final piece solid.

The wire was made by creating a helix path from splines menu. The circle was drawn for the shape of wire. The compound objects was selected from geometry drop down menu and loft option was chosen. The helix path was selected and assigned with circle shape with "get shape" tool.

Trying to get the 3D object from the shape appears to be a fairly easy task. Lathe tool is very useful when creating a symetrical object like a chess piece above. It basically is just few clicks and takes couple of minutes after some practice. The loft tool is useful when creating a object with shape like circle along the wanted random path which can be created in 3D max or imported from other program like Adobe Illustrator.
